New – Hemoglobin High Sensitivity Colorimetric Detection Kit

A new Hemoglobin (Hgb) High Sensitivity kit has just been released to allow for the detection of Hgb in low amount of samples. Researchers working on inflammation, kidney injury or oxidative stress may have an interest in this kit, especially when working with small animal models. Hemoglobin variations in levels are also associated with a variety of conditions ranging from anemia (low Hgb), erythrocytosis (high Hgb), thalassemias (aberrant chain synthesis), and sickling disorders (abnormal complex shape).

The universal reference procedure for hemoglobin determination in blood has been the cyanmethemoblobin method as determined by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute and the International Council for Standardization in Haematology. In this method, ferricyanide and potassium cyanide convert hemoglobin to a more stable cyanmethemoglobin form that is measured photometrically. While this method is straightforward and uses a single reaction solution, not all forms of hemoglobin are converted to cyanmethemoglobin at the same rate or even to completion. In addition to the safety issues surrounding cyanide, the reagent itself is not stable, so extra care needs to be taken to ensure the quality of any measurement.

The DetectX® Hemoglobin High Sensitivity Colorimetric Detection kit uses a single reaction solution that is stable at 4°C, is not light sensitive, and does not contain dangerous chemicals. All forms of hemoglobin react with Hemoglobin Detection Reagent and the generated color is measured photometrically at 450 nm. A human hemoglobin standard is provided to generate a standard curve for the assay.

The kit main features are described below:

  • Measurement of Hemoglobin in serum or plasma
  • Time to Answer – 30 minutes
  • Range – 20-0.313 µg/mL
  • Sensitivity – < 0.06 µg/mL
  • Sample Volume – 1µL
  • Samples/Kit – 88 in duplicate
  • Stability – Liquid 4°C stable reagents

A typical standard curve is shown below:
